Axel's take: 9.3/10

A standout Hanoi base for attentive service, with boutique-sized rooms and rooftop space. a five-star boutique city hotel near Hoan Kiem Lake, scored for what it is.

The Oriental Jade is a five-star boutique hotel near Hoan Kiem Lake, and we'd put it high on the shortlist for exploring Hanoi on foot. Its strongest asset is service: Tripadvisor, Booking.com and recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise thoughtful, helpful staff. Cleanliness, comfortable beds and a varied Vietnamese-and-Western breakfast also earn unusually consistent approval. The rooftop pool and bar add lake views to an already excellent sightseeing base.

The main compromise is scale, not standards. The hotel lists several room categories at 25–28 square meters, and guests on Tripadvisor and Expedia describe a compact rooftop pool area. Choose your room category carefully if space or a particular view matters. We'd skip it for a sprawling luxury-hotel experience, but for a well-run, personal city stay, it's a strong pick.

• Best for: first-time Hanoi visitors; couples on a city break; travelers who value personal service

• Watch out for: compact entry-level rooms; small rooftop pool and seating area; views depend on room category

• Location: Walkable Old Quarter address, within minutes of Hoan Kiem Lake and St. Joseph's Cathedral.

• Rooms: Comfortable and well kept; several categories measure 25–28 square meters, with larger suites available.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong guest feedback across Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor.

• Service: The defining strength: repeated praise for attentive staff and help with travel arrangements.

• Amenities: Outdoor rooftop pool, sky bar, spa, gym and restaurant; breakfast is a frequent highlight.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion; airport transfers, extra beds and early or late checkout can cost extra.
