Axel's take: 8.3/10
A strong budget pick for nature and hospitality, not beachfront convenience. a simple budget villa property in leafy grounds inland from Unawatuna Beach, scored for what it is.
Milkyway is a simple budget villa property beside a lagoon, rather than a full-service beach resort. We'd pick it for the leafy grounds, personal hospitality and good value. Booking.com and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the helpful hosts, wildlife-filled setting and generous breakfasts; recent reviews also describe comfortable beds and effective air-conditioning. It's particularly appealing if you'd rather watch birds from your balcony than stay among beach bars.
The important catch: it isn't beachfront. Booking.com places Unawatuna Beach roughly 2.4 kilometers away, so plan on walking or taking tuk-tuks. Rooms are basic, and although cleanliness ratings are broadly positive, some guests report bathroom-cleaning lapses. One detailed recent review also flags insects in a semi-open bathroom. We'd skip it if you need polished interiors, an insect-free environment or sand immediately outside.
