Axel's take on River Spirit & Southern Hills: #5 of 7 in Tulsa, 4.1/10
Best when the river, casino or university is your destination. River outings and destination entertainment give it character, but limited hotel choice, weak sightseeing access and few walkable alternatives restrict its appeal.
Riverside Drive around 71st–81st streets suits a different Tulsa trip: river-trail outings, casino entertainment and visits to Oral Roberts University. The casino concentrates restaurants and live shows in one destination, while the surrounding streets are much more spread out. Stay here when those activities are the point of the trip.
Do not mistake the Southern Hills name for public golf access: the country club is private and normally requires members to accompany guests. Nor is this a walkable substitute for downtown. Culture-focused first-timers will need rides, and quiet-seekers should distinguish residential streets from the casino and major roads.
- Best for: couples, luxury travelers, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You want downtown culture on foot; You expect unrestricted Southern Hills golf access
- Getting around: Route 490 runs along 71st and Route 500 serves the casino/81st Street connections; walk accessible river-trail sections, but use a car or taxi from TUL.
- After dark: The casino and its live-music venues provide the evening activity; do not expect the surrounding streets to form a continuous entertainment strip.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $171 a night · usually 7% under the public rate

Where to look in River Spirit & Southern Hills
- Riverside Drive around 81st Street. Choose the river side for trail outings and outdoor time; it is a different base from downtown’s cultural blocks. Hotels here: River Spirit Casino Resort.
- 71st Street at Lewis Avenue. A practical approach to ORU for campus visits; expect to drive between destinations rather than browse a pedestrian district. Hotels here: Marriott Tulsa Hotel Southern Hills.
How to choose
- Choose River Spirit Casino Resort if you want casino entertainment, concerts and seasonal pool time on-site, and can tolerate smoke on the casino floor.
- Choose Marriott Tulsa Hotel Southern Hills if ORU or business sets your schedule and you prefer an indoor pool to a casino-centered stay.
What paying more buys
Marriott Southern Hills costs only slightly more than River Spirit and offers an indoor pool and a practical ORU base. River Spirit already includes spacious rooms, a spa and extensive entertainment, so spending more does not mean getting more resort facilities. Casino-weekend visitors have little reason to switch; campus visitors may value Marriott’s different focus. Typical rates with Axel here run from $167 a night at River Spirit Casino Resort to $175 at Marriott Tulsa Hotel Southern Hills (last 30 days).
