Axel's take on DeWitt: #6 of 7 in Syracuse, 3.8/10
Useful east-side errands and quieter evenings, but little reason to linger. DeWitt has everyday dining and shopping, but limited sightseeing access, middling hotels and unremarkable value keep it below the more practical driving bases.
DeWitt along Erie Boulevard East is an everyday commercial base: shops, restaurants and convenient access to Le Moyne College matter more here than historic streets. Some meals and errands are genuinely possible on foot. The Empire State Trail also gives walkers and cyclists a useful corridor, though its road crossings require attention.
This is our east-side choice for travelers who prefer low-key evenings and expect to drive. It is not a village-center escape, and the boulevard's broad junctions interrupt casual wandering. Sidewalk improvements help without changing that basic character. Skip it for a first visit built around museums, theater and dinner downtown.
- Best for: a quiet stay, shopping
- Skip it if: You picture a walkable village center; Your plans revolve around downtown evenings
- Getting around: SY168 serves Erie Boulevard near Thompson Road; local errands are walkable with crossings, but sightseeing is easier by car; use taxi/rideshare from SYR.
- After dark: Choose it for an early-night routine, not a bar district; ask for a room away from Erie Boulevard rather than assuming suburban means silent.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $222 a night

How to choose
- Choose Holiday Inn Express & Suites Dewitt (Syracuse) by IHG if you want consistently praised cleanliness, helpful service, included breakfast and an indoor heated pool.

What paying more buys
Holiday Inn Express and Hampton cost considerably more than Econo Lodge, buying more consistent cleanliness, included hot breakfast and indoor pools. Hampton's small premium over Holiday Inn Express is harder to justify on amenities alone: both include parking, breakfast and a pool. Econo Lodge saves money for a basic overnight, but its recurring cleaning and odor complaints make the compromise substantial. Typical rates with Axel here run from $123 a night at Econo Lodge Dewitt I-90 to $232 at Hampton Inn & Suites Syracuse Dewitt (last 30 days).
