Axel's take on Bonfim: #6 of 8 in Porto, 8.0/10
Stay for everyday Porto, not a monument outside every door. Bonfim offers good hotels, useful metro access and the strongest value here, but fewer doorstep attractions and less historic atmosphere place it sixth.
Bonfim works best when you want to settle into Porto rather than stay inside its postcard. Rua do Bonfim, Campo 24 de Agosto and the streets toward the Fine Arts faculty mix neighborhood businesses with newer cafés and bars. São Lázaro, the Military Museum and smaller cultural stops give local wandering some substance beyond breakfast and dinner.
The trade-off is a less concentrated sightseeing experience: you will walk west or use the metro for much of the classic itinerary. For a longer, budget-minded stay, that is a reasonable exchange. Choose a residential side street for quieter evenings, rather than assuming every café-and-bar address will be peaceful.
- Best for: travelers on a budget, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You want the historic riverfront immediately outside; You want a concentrated all-night bar district
- Getting around: Campo 24 de Agosto and Heroísmo have A/B/C/E/F; selected E trains run directly from OPO, otherwise change at Trindade. Bolhão is walkable from the western streets.
- After dark: Generally residential, with individual café and bar pockets rather than one continuous party strip; visitors describe it as calmer than the core.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $106 a night · usually 5% under the public rate

How to choose
- Choose OCA Oriental Porto if you need Campanhã connections but still want spacious modern rooms and strong service.
- Choose Oporto Maison Anselmo if you need separate bedrooms and a kitchen for a family or longer stay.
- Choose Hospedaria Londres if the cheapest practical Campanhã stopover matters most, and you can manage steep stairs and some noise.
What paying more buys
Hospedaria Londres is the cheapest stopover, with stairs, variable windows and basic facilities. OCA Oriental adds spacious modern comfort near transport; Oporto Maison Anselmo adds apartment kitchens and separate bedrooms for only a modest step up within Bonfim. The pricier Editory Artist buys individual design and space, not flawless service or a pool, so practical travelers can spend less. Typical rates with Axel here run from $63 a night at Hospedaria Londres to $125 at The Editory Artist Baixa Porto Hotel (last 30 days).
