Axel's take on Tan Son Nhat Airport & Phu Nhuan: #6 of 6 in Ho Chi Minh City, 5.1/10
A sensible airport or work base, not the default sightseeing choice. Reasonable value and airport practicality cannot offset limited doorstep sightseeing, middling hotels and repeated road journeys for a conventional city stay.
Nguyen Van Troi and Hoang Van Thu form an airport-facing business corridor, with residential streets and everyday eating behind the main roads. Phu Nhuan adds neighborhood cafés and food along streets such as Nguyen Trong Tuyen; event venues on Hoang Van Thu give some business travelers a concrete reason to stay here. It is a working part of Saigon, not a miniature downtown.
Choose it for a short SGN stopover or work on this side of town. Phu Nhuan is not the terminal doorstep, and rush-hour traffic still matters. For a sightseeing-led stay, repeated road journeys outweigh the airport advantage. A quieter residential lane can work well, but do not assume an address on the airport corridor means restful surroundings.
- Best for: travelers on a budget, business trips and conventions
- Skip it if: Your priority is walking between the main sights; Your meetings are at SECC in the south
- Getting around: Walk for neighborhood meals, not downtown sightseeing; buses 152 and 109 use Nguyen Van Troi toward SGN T1/T2 and T3 respectively; a taxi/Grab is simplest with luggage, and there is no operating airport rail link.
- After dark: Expect neighborhood meals and cafés rather than a destination nightlife strip; the main airport corridor remains a traffic consideration.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $77 a night

Kim Yen Hotel is much cheaper, but room condition and smells are concerns. Eastin Grand Hotel Saigon adds more dependable comfort, spacious entry rooms and an outdoor pool; GARDEN PLAZA SAIGON offers space and full-service facilities, though interiors remain dated. The upgrade is less worthwhile for a brief overnight when you will barely use the facilities. Typical rates with Axel here run from $15 a night at Kim Yen Hotel to $96 at Collection O Havana Airport Hotel (last 30 days).
