Axel's take on Old Town: #1 of 6 in Albuquerque, 7.0/10
The best first-visit base, unless nightlife matters most. Old Town wins on historic character and the strongest hotels, with useful sightseeing access, but higher rates and limited evening variety weaken its value.
Old Town feels distinctly Albuquerque: adobe courtyards, San Felipe de Neri and small galleries cluster around the plaza. Albuquerque Museum and Explora give families something substantial beyond souvenir shopping, while Sawmill Market adds an easy food stop a short walk north. This is my first choice for a visit built around culture and unhurried exploring.
The compromise is evening variety. Locals answering visitors’ questions generally separate Old Town sightseeing from evenings in Nob Hill or Downtown. Stay here for the historic setting, not a succession of late bars. ART on Central makes those other districts accessible, but Albuquerque beyond its walkable pockets still takes planning.
- Best for: first-time visitors, families, couples, museums and culture
- Skip it if: Late-night bar-hopping is the priority; You want a predominantly local shopping district
- Getting around: Walk between the plaza, museums and Sawmill; Central has ART 766/777 and bus 66; from ABQ, take bus 50 Downtown and transfer, or use a car/rideshare.
- After dark: Think dinner and an evening stroll rather than a late bar crawl; locals favor Nob Hill for a fuller night out.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $204 a night

- Bellamah Avenue at Sawmill Market. Start here for food-hall evenings and an easy connection to Old Town’s museums; good for couples mixing dining and sightseeing. Hotels here: Hotel Chaco, Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town.
- Rio Grande Boulevard near the plaza. Favor the plaza end for galleries and historic streets; farther north suits drivers wanting straightforward interstate access. Hotels here: Casas de Suenos Old Town Historic Inn, an Ascend Collection Hotel, Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town, Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn.
- Central Avenue by the BioPark. A practical Route 66 stretch for combining Old Town with the aquarium and gardens, rather than lingering on quiet streets. Hotels here: El Vado Motel, The Monterey Motel, Econo Lodge Albuquerque Old Town.
How to choose
- Choose Hotel Chaco if you value spacious rooms, distinctive design and strong hospitality enough to pay more.
- Choose Casas de Suenos Old Town Historic Inn, an Ascend Collection Hotel if you want a characterful casita, cooked breakfast and a layout with separate bedrooms.
- Choose Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn if you want a cheaper driving base with free parking and useful shuttle service.
What paying more buys
Hotel Chaco costs more than Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn for distinctive design, a spa and rooftop dining. Casas de Suenos buys individual casitas and cooked-to-order breakfast, though finishes vary. Neither upgrade is essential if you mainly need a comfortable room between outings; the Rio Grande Inn already offers spacious rooms, a pool and helpful staff. Typical rates with Axel here run from $83 a night at Econo Lodge Albuquerque Old Town to $312 at Hotel Chaco (last 30 days).
