Hotels in New Yorka small, family-run mid-range boutique hotel in Long Island City
8.8/10
A strong Queens base for roomy stays and genuinely helpful service.
The Modernist is a family-run, 16-room boutique hotel in Long Island City: a strong mid-range pick if you prioritize room comfort over full-service facilities. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, cleanliness and unusually generous space by New York standards. Kitchenette options make longer stays practical, while nearby subway access keeps Manhattan within easy reach. We'd choose it for a more residential base rather than a hotel-centered trip.
The trade-offs are limited dining and some booking fine print. There's no restaurant, bar or breakfast service, and the neighborhood won't deliver Manhattan's doorstep bustle. Check the exact room category: private terraces and skyline views aren't universal. Expedia lists a nightly resort fee, and the hotel requires a substantial refundable incidental deposit. We'd skip it if on-site dining or being in the middle of the action matters most.

#1 of 9 hotels in Long Island City by Axel's take. Long Island City is #12 of 12 places to stay in New York. The best hotels in Long Island City, ranked · Where to stay in New York
Axel is a travel agent that books hotels at private rates you will not find on the public booking sites. It is free to use: a free account takes just an email address. This page lists every stay Axel has priced for The Modernist Hotel in New York in the last 7 days, each beside the public rate seen for the same dates. They are examples, not this person's dates. Sign up free to book one, or tell Axel your own dates and it checks live rooms and rates at The Modernist Hotel for them.
A strong Queens base for roomy stays and genuinely helpful service. a small, family-run mid-range boutique hotel in Long Island City, scored for what it is.
Best for: couples comfortable using the subway; longer stays with kitchenette needs; travelers prioritizing space and personal service
Watch out for: nightly resort fee and substantial incidental deposit; no restaurant, bar or breakfast service; views and outdoor space depend on room category
Location: Near 39th Avenue subway, with neighborhood cafés and restaurants; not a central Manhattan setting.
Rooms: Space and design draw strong praise; choose carefully for kitchenettes, skyline views or private outdoor space.
Cleanliness: Consistently praised in recent Expedia reviews and positive Tripadvisor reports.
Service: Friendly, helpful front-desk staff are one of the clearest strengths across review sites.
Amenities: Art gallery and kitchenette options, but no restaurant, bar or breakfast; no on-site parking.
Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a nightly resort fee; refundable incidentals, dogs, early arrival and late departure can add charges.
