Hotels in RomeA historic five-star grand hotel on Via Veneto
7.6/10
Choose it for Roman grandeur and generous rooms, not consistently polished modern luxury.
The Westin Excelsior is a historic five-star grand hotel on Via Veneto, and we'd choose it for old-school atmosphere rather than cutting-edge luxury. Recent Tripadvisor guests praise spacious rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff, with Villa Borghese nearby and the Spanish Steps within walking reach. Its ornate public spaces still make an impression.
The main trade-off is condition: Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly describe tired furniture, worn carpets or rooms needing attention. Service earns plenty of praise, but recent accounts also show lapses in follow-through—more disappointing at this level. The small indoor pool, sauna and gym are useful extras, not reasons alone to book. It's a good fit for travelers who appreciate traditional grandeur; we'd skip it if fresh interiors and reliably seamless five-star service are priorities.

Best for: Travelers who enjoy traditional grand hotels; Sightseers wanting a Via Veneto base; Guests who prioritize spacious rooms
Watch out for: Recurring reports of tired room furnishings; Uneven five-star service; Breakfast and parking can cost extra
Location: Via Veneto, near Villa Borghese; Spanish Steps and Barberini metro are walkable.
Rooms: Generous proportions and comfortable beds win praise, but dated furnishings recur across reviews.
Cleanliness: Generally positive overall, with stronger cleanliness ratings than property-condition ratings on Expedia.
Service: Many guests praise helpful staff; others report missed requests and inconsistent attention.
Amenities: Small indoor pool, sauna, 24-hour gym, restaurant and bars; no hotel airport shuttle.
Fees and surprises: City tax is additional; parking and breakfast may cost extra, and coffee-making equipment must be requested.
