Axel's take: 8.5/10

Downtown grandeur and warm service, with rooms that don't always match the entrance. a historic luxury railway hotel in downtown Calgary, scored for what it is.

Fairmont Palliser is a historic luxury railway hotel, and a strong pick if you prefer character to contemporary design. Its grand public rooms and downtown location are the draw, but the staff help justify the choice: Expedia, Booking.com and recent Accor guests repeatedly praise friendly, attentive service. Cleanliness and comfortable beds also earn strong marks. Hawthorn's dining room and bar, an indoor pool and a spa round out a proper full-service stay.

The catch is that the grandeur isn't consistent upstairs. Recent guests describe some tired-looking rooms, and small bathrooms recur across sites. Train noise is a genuine room-location issue; light sleepers should request accommodation away from the tracks and elevators. Parking costs extra, and Expedia also lists an in-room Wi-Fi charge. We'd skip it if spacious bathrooms, modern finishes and dependable quiet matter more than heritage.

• Best for: travelers who enjoy historic hotels; downtown sightseeing and business trips; couples wanting full-service comforts

• Watch out for: train noise in track-facing rooms; small bathrooms and some dated rooms; parking and possible Wi-Fi charges

• Location: Central downtown setting near Calgary Tower, with dining and shopping within walking distance.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds, but room sizes vary; dated finishes and compact bathrooms recur in reviews.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Expedia, Booking.com and recent Accor feedback.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff attract substantial praise, despite occasional lapses in follow-through.

• Amenities: Hawthorn restaurant and bar, indoor pool, hot tub, fitness facilities and spa; Gold rooms add lounge access.

• Fees and surprises: Paid parking; Expedia lists an incidental deposit and in-room Wi-Fi charges, so confirm inclusions.
