Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong practical pick, with standout staff and useful extras rather than downtown atmosphere. a straightforward, budget-friendly chain hotel south of downtown, scored for what it is.

This straightforward, budget-friendly chain hotel south of downtown gets the essentials right. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean, spacious rooms, comfortable beds and unusually helpful staff. Free parking and hot breakfast make it good value, while the indoor pool, children's pool and hot tub give families useful extras. Nearby CTrain access makes exploring Calgary practical without driving everywhere.

The compromises are an aging property and a busy-road setting, not a downtown doorstep. Some recent guests find the bathrooms dated, and drivers mention awkward access when approaching from downtown. Breakfast earns mostly positive feedback, but don't expect an elaborate spread. Expedia also lists a nightly facilities fee; confirm it before booking. We'd choose it for a comfortable, practical base, but skip it for polished interiors or a walk-everywhere city break.

• Best for: families watching their budget; travelers bringing a car; sightseers comfortable using transit

• Watch out for: aging interiors and some dated bathrooms; busy-road setting and awkward vehicle access; nightly facilities fee listed by Expedia

• Location: South of downtown; 39th Avenue CTrain station is about seven minutes away on foot.

• Rooms: Guests commonly praise spacious rooms and comfortable beds; microwaves and refrigerators are provided.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback, despite the property's age.

• Service: Friendly, helpful front-desk staff are the clearest recurring highlight.

• Amenities: Included hot breakfast, Wi-Fi and parking; indoor pool, children's pool, hot tub and a small gym.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a nightly facilities fee and charges for rollaway beds; confirm applicable extras directly.
