Axel's take: 8.1/10

A comfortable city base with good breakfast, but rooms and service lack consistency. a practical 4-star city hotel near Unirii Square, scored for what it is.

Mercure Bucharest Unirii is a practical 4-star city hotel: a strong pick for comfortable beds, a substantial breakfast and walking access to Old Town. Booking.com and Expedia guests generally praise cleanliness, helpful staff and convenience, while recent Accor reviews reinforce those strengths. We'd choose it for a straightforward business trip or sightseeing break rather than a special-occasion stay.

The finish is less consistent than the brand might suggest. Tripadvisor guests mention tired carpets and rooms needing attention, and reception warmth and complaint handling vary across sources. Standard rooms are fairly compact; Privilege rooms offer more space. Nearby Piața Unirii reconstruction is also disrupting traffic, so allow extra transfer time. We'd skip it if polished service and uniformly fresh interiors matter more than a convenient base.

• Best for: business travelers; couples on sightseeing breaks; travelers who prioritize breakfast

• Watch out for: uneven room condition; inconsistent reception service; Piața Unirii construction and traffic

• Location: Old Town is walkable; the hotel's own site puts Unirii metro around 700 metres away.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds; standard rooms start at 20 m², with larger Privilege options and some reports of worn finishes.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback on Booking.com and Expedia, despite occasional carpet and housekeeping complaints.

• Service: Helpful staff earn frequent praise, but reception manner and problem resolution are uneven.

• Amenities: Buffet breakfast, restaurant, lobby bar, free Wi-Fi and meeting rooms suit a practical city stay.

• Fees and surprises: City tax applies; breakfast may be extra, and airport transfers and pets incur charges; Expedia lists free parking.
