Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong luxury pick for walkable Boston, with a few five-star caveats. A historic five-star luxury hotel overlooking Boston’s Public Garden, scored for what it is.

The Newbury is a historic five-star overlooking the Public Garden, and a strong choice for a Boston trip built around walking, shopping and dining. Its location is the standout, but not the whole story: Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the cleanliness, comfortable rooms and welcoming staff. We’d favor a park-view room for the setting.

The qualifications matter at this level. Some recent Tripadvisor guests describe uneven follow-through when things go wrong, although the overall service picture remains strongly positive. Reserve rooftop restaurant Contessa ahead rather than assuming a hotel stay guarantees a table. There’s also a mandatory nightly residential fee and separately charged valet parking. We’d skip it if an on-site pool or spa is central to your luxury-hotel plans: neither is available.

• Best for: Luxury city breaks; Back Bay shopping and sightseeing; Couples seeking park views

• Watch out for: Mandatory residential fee and extra-cost valet parking.; Book Contessa ahead.; No on-site pool or spa.

• Location: Opposite the Public Garden, beside Newbury Street shopping and one block from Arlington’s Green Line station.

• Rooms: Comfort and spaciousness earn strong praise; park-view rooms are especially well liked.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength, with excellent cleanliness ratings across major guest-review sites.

• Service: Usually warm and attentive, with some recent reports of inconsistent problem handling.

• Amenities: Rooftop Contessa, Street Bar, guest-only Library Lounge and a 24-hour gym; no pool or spa.

• Fees and surprises: Required nightly residential fee, separate valet charges and an incidental authorization at check-in.
