Axel's take: 8.9/10

Polished rooms and standout staff make this a strong Back Bay base. a design-led upscale hotel in Back Bay’s former police headquarters, scored for what it is.

Hotel AKA Back Bay is an upscale city hotel in Boston’s former police headquarters, now redesigned with a restrained, contemporary look. It’s a strong pick for exploring on foot: Newbury Street, Copley Square and the Public Garden are nearby. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds. The Berkeley bistro, lounge-library and fitness facilities give it substance beyond the address.

The main reservation is value rather than the basics. A mandatory nightly destination fee and separately charged valet parking add to the bill; Equinox access is part of that fee, not an entirely free extra. Entry-level rooms are smaller than higher categories, so check the room type carefully. We’d skip it if you want maximum space or an upscale stay without mandatory extras.

• Best for: couples exploring Boston on foot; business travelers wanting attentive service; travelers who will use the fitness facilities

• Watch out for: mandatory nightly destination fee; costly valet parking; smaller entry-level rooms

• Location: Walkable Back Bay base near shopping, gardens and Arlington and Back Bay stations.

• Rooms: Redesigned interiors and widely praised beds; compare room categories for space.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest reviews and major-site ratings.

• Service: Helpful front-desk, door and luggage teams repeatedly stand out.

• Amenities: French bistro, lounge-library, Technogym fitness center and nearby Equinox access.

• Fees and surprises: Nightly destination fee; valet parking and pets carry separate charges.
