Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong Cambridge base if you prioritize clean rooms and transit over space. A compact mid-range boutique hotel opposite Porter Square station, scored for what it is.

Hotel 1868 is a compact mid-range boutique hotel whose strongest selling point is practicality: Porter Square station is across the street, with Harvard one Red Line stop away. It's a strong pick for a Cambridge visit without a car. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, comfortable beds and helpful staff; Tripadvisor and Booking.com feedback broadly backs that up. Industrial-inspired styling adds character without making this a luxury stay.

Space is the main compromise. The hotel lists Mini Queens at 160 square feet and Standard Queens at 200, so even upgrading won't buy sprawling quarters. Breakfast isn't included, though nearby cafés make that manageable, and parking is paid valet only. We'd choose it for solo trips or short stays as a couple; skip it if you need room for family luggage or expect full-service facilities.

• Best for: Car-free Cambridge visits; Solo business travelers; Couples on short stays

• Watch out for: Compact queen-only rooms; No included breakfast; Paid valet-only parking

• Location: Opposite Porter Square station, with restaurants nearby and Harvard one Red Line stop away.

• Rooms: Mini Queens are 160 square feet; Standards are 200, with comfortable beds frequently praised.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong feedback across recent Expedia reviews and Booking.com ratings.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming reception staff are a recurring strength across sites.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour gym, business center and in-room coffee cover the essentials.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast is not included; parking is paid valet only, with oversized vehicles requiring advance discussion.
