Axel's take: 5.9/10

Helpful staff can't make up for unreliable cleanliness and room condition. a no-frills roadside motel in South Austin, scored for what it is.

Skylite Inn is a basic roadside motel beside I-35, better suited to a short, car-based stop than an Austin sightseeing getaway. Free parking and helpful staff are its strongest selling points. Expedia and Trip.com guests often praise the welcome, and some report comfortable beds and refreshed rooms. Even for budget lodging, though, the condition is too inconsistent for an easy recommendation.

Recent reviews describe dirty bedding, smoke smells, damaged fixtures and repeated cockroach sightings alongside reports of clean rooms. Renovation work was reported in April and May 2026; completion isn't confirmed, and autumn reviews still flag maintenance problems. We'd consider it only if keeping costs down outweighs comfort and consistency. Skip it if dependable housekeeping or a smoke-free room is essential.

  • Best for: budget travelers with a car; short South Austin stopovers

  • Watch out for: recurring cleanliness and cockroach complaints; smoke odors and damaged fixtures; renovation completion unconfirmed

  • Location: South Austin frontage-road setting; better for driving than a walkable downtown stay.

  • Rooms: Some refreshed rooms earn praise, but recent guests still report broken fixtures and smoke odors.

  • Cleanliness: Uneven: clean-room reports sit alongside repeated complaints about dirt, stained bedding and roaches.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistently praised feature.

  • Amenities: Free parking and Wi-Fi; rooms list microwaves and refrigerators, but there is no pool or breakfast.

  • Fees and surprises: Pets carry a fee; Booking.com lists a refundable cash damage deposit, and renovation status needs checking.
