    The stretch between Teatro Massimo and Piazza Politeama is the easiest all-round compromise: grand theaters, the Salinas archaeological museum nearby, and shopping along Via Ruggero Settimo. You can spend the day in the old town, then return to broader streets rather than sleeping over a market. It is my first choice for a short first visit or a work trip.

    Mondello is a seaside holiday with Palermo available as an outing, not the other way around. The sandy bay, swimming, former fishing village and Liberty-style villas give it a completely different rhythm from the old town. Choose it for family beach days, time on the water, or a couple’s stay built around the sea rather than museums.
