Axel's take: 8.8/10

Schoolhouse character and strong service make this a smart convention-center pick. an upscale 4-star downtown hotel in a converted historic school, scored for what it is.

The Slate is an upscale 4-star in the former Emily Griffith Opportunity School, directly across from the Colorado Convention Center. We'd pick it for distinctive surroundings without sacrificing dependable hotel basics: school-themed details give the building personality, while recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. The Teachers' Lounge restaurant and bar adds a convenient place to unwind, and there's a proper fitness center.

The main compromises are room choice and parking. Some king rooms are compact, and several Tripadvisor guests flag street noise, so light sleepers should request a quieter room. Hotel parking is valet-only and expensive; breakfast also costs extra. It's a strong fit for convention trips and downtown weekends, but we'd look elsewhere if generous room space or inexpensive on-site parking is essential.

• Best for: convention-center visitors; couples who like historic buildings; car-free downtown weekends

• Watch out for: expensive valet-only hotel parking; street noise in some rooms; compact entry-level king rooms

• Location: Across from the convention center, with downtown dining and cultural sights within walking distance.

• Rooms: Modern and comfortable; layouts vary, with some compact kings and street-facing noise.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent guest feedback, especially on Expedia.

• Service: Recent reviews strongly favor the friendly, helpful staff, despite occasional individual service complaints.

• Amenities: Teachers' Lounge restaurant and bar, room service, free Wi-Fi, laundry and a 24-hour gym with Pelotons.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast and valet parking cost extra; Hilton lists no self-parking, and pets incur a nonrefundable fee.
