Axel's take: 7.6/10

A practical NYC base with friendly staff, but dated rooms and parking hassles. a no-frills 2-star near Journal Square PATH, scored for what it is.

This no-frills 2-star near Journal Square is a good pick for travelers who want a straightforward base rather than a hotel experience. Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and convenient Manhattan access. Rooms are often described as spacious, and included breakfast, microwaves and refrigerators make the basics easier. The PATH station is roughly a five- to ten-minute walk away.

The trade-off is an aging building: dated fittings, small bathrooms and soundproofing complaints recur, although cleanliness earns better feedback than condition. Breakfast is useful rather than a reason to book. Parking is limited and paid, and a recent guest reports construction around the neighborhood. Confirm the Newark shuttle's limited operating hours before relying on it. We'd skip it for a polished getaway or if quiet rooms and easy parking are priorities.

• Best for: budget-minded NYC sightseers; families wanting extra room; travelers using PATH rather than driving

• Watch out for: dated interiors and variable noise; limited paid parking; Newark shuttle operates limited hours

• Location: Short walk to Journal Square PATH and local dining; recent feedback mentions neighborhood construction.

• Rooms: Often spacious, with microwaves and refrigerators; dated fittings and some small bathrooms.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength across sources, despite the building's age.

• Service: Friendly, helpful front-desk and housekeeping teams receive consistent praise.

• Amenities: Free breakfast and Wi-Fi, guest laundry, a small gym and a limited-hours Newark shuttle.

• Fees and surprises: Paid parking is limited; a refundable damage deposit is listed, so confirm terms before arrival.
