Axel's take: 8.0/10

A strong budget base with helpful staff, but parking and quiet aren't guaranteed. A refreshed, no-frills 2-star motor lodge in the Marina District, scored for what it is.

Signature Inn is a simple, Sonesta-branded motor lodge, and we'd pick it for an affordable Marina stay rather than hotel extras. Expedia lists a 2023 remodel, and recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests generally praise clean, comfortable rooms and helpful staff. Chestnut Street's restaurants are close by, with the Palace of Fine Arts within walking distance. Free parking and a rooftop seating terrace add real value for this class.

The catches are practical: parking is tight, first-come-first-served and not guaranteed, while street-facing rooms can pick up Lombard traffic noise. Ask for a room toward the back. There's no elevator to the upper floors, and guest feedback includes occasional bathroom and maintenance niggles. It's a strong sightseeing base; we'd skip it if you need assured parking, step-free upper-floor access or reliably quiet nights.

• Best for: Budget-conscious sightseers; Travelers exploring the Marina and Presidio; Short stays near restaurants

• Watch out for: Limited, tight parking spaces; Lombard Street noise in front rooms; No elevator to upper floors

• Location: Walkable to Chestnut Street dining and the Palace of Fine Arts, but directly on busy Lombard Street.

• Rooms: Refreshed, straightforward rooms with mini-fridges; occasional bathroom and maintenance complaints.

• Cleanliness: Recent reviews lean strongly positive, with some isolated housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming staff are a recurring strength across recent guest feedback.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, rooftop seating terrace and lobby coffee; a simple motel rather than a full-service hotel.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is free but limited and not guaranteed; Expedia lists fees for early check-in and late checkout.
