Axel's take: 7.0/10

Excellent downtown views and access, but upkeep remains the compromise. An independent mid-range hotel in the Financial District, formerly a W, scored for what it is.

The Washington is an independent mid-range hotel in the Financial District, not a current W Hotels property. We'd consider it for downtown sightseeing rather than a polished hotel experience: the 9/11 Memorial, Wall Street and subway connections are close, and World Trade Center views are a recurring highlight. Booking.com and Expedia guests generally rate it positively, with recent praise for comfortable beds, helpful staff and rooms that offer decent space for Manhattan.

The compromise is consistency. Tripadvisor and Hotels.com reviews repeatedly describe worn furnishings and elevator problems, while cleanliness feedback ranges from spotless to disappointing. Management reported phased room upgrades in August 2026, but October guests still mention tired interiors. The official site advertises a restaurant, lounge and gym; confirm dining availability before relying on it. It's a workable sightseeing base, but we'd skip it for a special occasion or if reliable elevators and immaculate upkeep are priorities.

• Best for: Downtown sightseeing; Travelers prioritizing skyline views; Short stays with modest expectations

• Watch out for: Recurring elevator delays and outages; Uneven room maintenance and cleanliness; Confirm dining availability

• Location: Strong Financial District base near the 9/11 Memorial, Wall Street and several subway lines.

• Rooms: Often reasonably spacious, with memorable views in some categories, but recurring wear and maintenance complaints.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive booking-site ratings, tempered by repeated reports of inconsistent cleaning.

• Service: Recent Expedia guests frequently praise staff; Tripadvisor reports more uneven problem handling.

• Amenities: The hotel advertises free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour gym, terrace, restaurant and lounge; verify dining operations.

• Fees and surprises: A security-deposit hold is required; release can take longer for international cards, and package handling carries a fee.
