Axel's take: 8.6/10

Warm service and a convenient Manhattan base outweigh compact rooms and extra fees. a four-star boutique hotel in Manhattan’s Rose Hill neighborhood, scored for what it is.

Park South is a four-star boutique hotel in Rose Hill, and a strong pick if you want personal service rather than a big Midtown operation. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds; Booking.com feedback broadly agrees. The nearby 6 train and walkable access to Madison Square Park make it a practical sightseeing base. A rooftop bar and 24-hour gym add useful extras without making this a full-scale luxury hotel.

The trade-offs are space, sound and extras. Entry-level rooms are compact, and some guests report loud air-conditioning or noise from neighboring rooms and the rooftop, although others find it notably quiet. Request a room away from elevators and nightlife. The daily destination fee and paid valet parking weaken the value. We'd skip it if generous room space or dependable silence tops your list.

• Best for: couples on city breaks; solo and business travelers; sightseers who use the subway

• Watch out for: compact entry-level rooms; room-dependent air-conditioning and nightlife noise; daily destination fee

• Location: Near the 28th Street 6 train, neighborhood restaurants and Madison Square Park.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds, but entry-level rooms are compact and sound insulation draws mixed feedback.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com feedback.

• Service: Friendly, helpful front-desk and door staff are the clearest recurring highlight.

• Amenities: Rooftop bar, on-site dining, library lounge, free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour gym.

• Fees and surprises: A daily destination fee applies; valet parking costs extra.
