Axel's take: 8.3/10

Go for the coastal setting and resort life, not consistently flawless luxury. A sprawling luxury oceanfront resort on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, scored for what it is.

Terranea is a sprawling luxury oceanfront resort, and we'd choose it for a coastal escape rather than an LA sightseeing base. Ocean views, walking trails, four pools, a refreshed spa and nine-hole golf course give you plenty of reasons to stay put. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms and helpful staff; Tripadvisor feedback also makes clear that the setting is the main attraction. It's a strong pick for families and couples who want their weekend centered on the resort.

The trade-off is consistency at luxury expectations. Recent Tripadvisor guests describe busy-period service delays, communication lapses and some worn room furnishings, although Expedia's overall feedback is substantially warmer. Daily resort fees and overnight parking charges add friction. We'd skip it if you want an intimate hotel, uniformly polished rooms or reliably seamless service on a packed holiday weekend.

• Best for: Families wanting pools and outdoor activities; Couples on a coastal weekend; Spa and short-course golf breaks

• Watch out for: Service can struggle on busy weekends; Some reports of worn room furnishings; Daily resort fee and charged overnight parking

• Location: Oceanfront grounds and coastal trails are the draw; better for staying put than exploring LA.

• Rooms: Spacious guestrooms have private balconies or patios; some recent guests report tired furnishings.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength overall, supported by strong Expedia and Tripadvisor cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Frequently praised as friendly and helpful, with recurring busy-period delays and communication complaints.

• Amenities: Four pools, a waterslide, refreshed spa, fitness facilities, restaurants and nine-hole, par-three golf.

• Fees and surprises: Daily resort fee and overnight parking charges; the hotel says its meeting-space renovation is complete.
