Axel's take: 7.8/10

Pick it for Plaka and welcoming hosts, not polished rooms. a family-run 2-star in a historic Plaka mansion, scored for what it is.

Acropolis House is a family-run 2-star in a 19th-century Plaka mansion, and we'd choose it for sightseeing rather than spending much time indoors. Its walkable location near Syntagma and Athens's ancient sights is the strongest draw. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, while the old-fashioned interiors give it more personality than a standard budget hotel. It's good value if location and hospitality matter more than modern finishes.

The compromises are real: rooms and bathrooms can be cramped, furnishings need updating, and there is no elevator. Some rooms have private bathrooms across the hallway, so check the exact category. Cleanliness is generally rated well, though recent guests report uneven attention to detail; breakfast also divides opinion. We'd skip it for mobility needs or a reliably spacious, freshly renovated room.

Best for: budget-minded sightseers; travelers who prefer family-run hotels; short stays exploring Athens on foot
Watch out for: stairs throughout, with no elevator; small rooms and dated bathrooms; some private bathrooms are across the hall
Location: Excellent Plaka base, within walking distance of Syntagma, restaurants and major ancient sights.
Rooms: Simple, old-fashioned and sometimes cramped; confirm whether the bathroom is ensuite.
Cleanliness: Positive overall ratings, but several recent guests flag dust or bathroom-cleaning shortcomings.
Service: Warm, helpful hosts are a consistent strength across booking and review sites.
Amenities: Breakfast, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, luggage storage and 24-hour reception; no elevator or onsite parking.
Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a seasonal local tax and a card-payment surcharge; confirm payment terms directly.
