Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong downtown base if cleanliness and helpful staff matter more than room size. a limited-service, budget-friendly chain hotel on the Chinatown–SoHo border, scored for what it is.

Best Western Plus Soho is a straightforward, limited-service hotel on the Chinatown–SoHo border, and a strong pick for travelers who spend their days exploring. Recent Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and welcoming staff. Canal Street subway connections are close, and the included hot breakfast adds practical value rather than luxury.

The main compromise is space: standard rooms are compact, with limited storage, so packing light helps. Street-facing rooms can pick up traffic noise, while some rear rooms trade a quieter setting for a wall-facing outlook. The surrounding Canal Street blocks are busy with vendors, not a polished boutique-hotel setting. We'd choose it for solo trips or couples' sightseeing breaks; skip it if you want generous rooms, dependable views or full-service facilities.

• Best for: solo travelers exploring downtown; couples packing light; sightseers who value subway access

• Watch out for: compact rooms and limited storage; street noise versus wall-facing rear rooms; busy Canal Street surroundings

• Location: Just south of Canal Street, convenient for Chinatown, SoHo and several subway lines.

• Rooms: Modern, comfortable basics; standard rooms are small, and outlooks vary considerably.

• Cleanliness: Consistently praised across recent reviews on several major sites.

• Service: Friendly, helpful front-desk staff are a recurring strength.

• Amenities: Included hot breakfast, free Wi-Fi, a small 24-hour gym and in-room mini-fridges.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is paid and offsite; breakfast is included.
