Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong sightseeing base with a pool, provided you can live with compact rooms. a tropical-themed 4-star high-rise by Times Square, scored for what it is.

Margaritaville is a tropical-themed 4-star high-rise that works better as a fun Manhattan base than a full resort escape. We'd pick it for Broadway, subway access and a swim between sightseeing stops. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, helpful staff and the central location; the heated outdoor pool and skyline-view rooftop bar give it more personality than many Midtown alternatives.

The compromises are mostly space and extras. Standard rooms are compact, a mandatory nightly resort fee applies, and breakfast and parking cost extra. The hotel confirms that cold-season pool hours end in the afternoon, so don't assume an evening swim. It's a strong choice for travelers who will use the location and pool; we'd skip it for a spacious room or a quieter neighborhood.

• Best for: Broadway and first-time NYC visitors; Families wanting a sightseeing-break pool; Couples who enjoy themed bars

• Watch out for: Compact standard rooms; Mandatory nightly resort fee; Shorter cold-season pool hours

• Location: Very convenient for Times Square, Broadway and subway connections, rather than a quiet neighborhood stay.

• Rooms: Bright, tropical styling; standard rooms are compact, with larger suites available.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Tripadvisor and recent Expedia guest reviews.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming staff earn frequent praise, although individual experiences vary.

• Amenities: Heated year-round outdoor pool, rooftop bar, restaurants and a 24-hour fitness center.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory resort fee; breakfast and parking are extra; pool hours shorten in colder months.
