Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong downtown base with standout staff, but choose your room carefully. a modern, upscale Marriott select-service hotel in downtown Chapel Hill, scored for what it is.

This modern, upscale Marriott select-service hotel is a strong pick for UNC visits and weekends built around Franklin Street. You're paying for walkability rather than luxury, and the evidence suggests it delivers: recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, helpful staff and convenient location. Sleek rooms have hard flooring, mini-fridges and walk-in showers, while the lounge and outdoor fireplace give you somewhere to unwind beyond your room.

The main compromise is noise: several guests describe late-night music and crowds from nearby bars, although many others report quiet stays. Ask for a room away from the bars, particularly at the west end. Breakfast and underground parking cost extra, and Marriott lists housekeeping every other day. We'd choose it for a convenient, well-kept downtown stay, but light sleepers and travelers wanting more inclusive amenities should compare alternatives.

Best for: UNC campus visitors; Walkable downtown weekends; Business travelers
Watch out for: Late-night noise in bar-facing rooms; Breakfast and parking cost extra; Housekeeping every other day
Location: Excellent walking access to Franklin Street restaurants, shops and UNC's campus edge.
Rooms: Modern, minimalist rooms with hard flooring, mini-fridges and walk-in showers; noise varies by position.
Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews, supported by strong cleanliness ratings.
Service: Friendly, helpful front-desk staff receive repeated praise across multiple sites.
Amenities: Lounge serving tapas and cocktails, outdoor fireplace, fitness center and EV charging.
Fees and surprises: Breakfast, garage parking and dogs incur charges; the garage cannot accommodate large trucks or trailers.
