Axel's take: 8.2/10

A strong family all-inclusive, but confirm reopening before booking. a family-friendly beachfront all-inclusive with five-star billing, not high-end luxury, scored for what it is.

Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada is a family-friendly beachfront all-inclusive with five-star billing, but we'd choose it for an easy, sociable vacation rather than luxury polish. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, clean rooms, tropical gardens and energetic entertainment. Food feedback is mostly positive, especially for the specialty restaurants, though the buffet doesn't win everyone over. It's a strong pick for families and couples who want activities and beach time without much planning.

The immediate catch: the resort is closed for refurbishment from August 30 through October 26, 2026; WestJet identifies pool renovations specifically. Confirm reopening and facility availability before committing. Earlier guests repeatedly describe dated rooms, and the work's results are not yet established. Evening entertainment can also be loud. We'd skip it for a quiet retreat or if sleek rooms and consistently refined dining are priorities.

Best for: families wanting organized activities; couples who enjoy lively resorts; beach-focused all-inclusive vacations
Watch out for: closed through October 26, 2026 for refurbishment; dated rooms in pre-renovation reviews; loud evening entertainment
Location: Direct beach access on Costa Dorada; Puerto Plata's historic center is a short drive away.
Rooms: Spacious rooms with balconies; pre-closure reviews repeatedly flag dated furnishings and occasional maintenance issues.
Cleanliness: Generally strong guest feedback for rooms and grounds, with some less consistent reports about pool cleanliness before refurbishment.
Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistent strength across Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews.
Amenities: Advertised facilities include pools, Star Camp, a gym, specialty restaurants and entertainment; confirm availability after reopening.
Fees and surprises: Spa treatments and babysitting cost extra; confirm reopening after the scheduled refurbishment closure.
