Axel's take: 7.8/10

A practical downtown base with good breakfast, but dated rooms and a closed pool. a no-frills downtown chain hotel on a steep hill, scored for what it is.

This is a no-frills downtown chain hotel, and we'd pick it for a practical city break rather than hotel downtime. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, included hot breakfast and generally clean, comfortable rooms. Restaurants and the trolley are within walking distance, making it a useful base for exploring without driving everywhere.

The trade-offs are an older building, dated finishes and a steep uphill return that guests on several sites flag. Parking costs extra, so factor that into the value. Most importantly, IHG lists the outdoor pool as closed for renovation through December 31, 2026; don't book expecting a swim. It's a good fit for travelers spending their days out, but we'd skip it for a pool-focused family trip or if uphill walking is difficult.

• Best for: value-minded city explorers; travelers who prioritize breakfast and helpful staff; short downtown stays

• Watch out for: pool closed for renovation through December 31, 2026; steep uphill walk back; paid parking and dated finishes

• Location: Downtown restaurants and trolley access are useful, but the hill makes walking back demanding.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds earn praise; dated furnishings and finishes remain a recurring drawback.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive across major sites, despite occasional housekeeping and odor complaints.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff are one of the most consistent strengths.

• Amenities: Included hot breakfast, Wi-Fi and a fitness center; outdoor pool temporarily closed.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is charged separately; IHG says no airport or local shuttle is available.
