Axel's take: 9.3/10

A palace worth choosing for its setting and service, not oversized rooms. A five-star heritage palace hotel on an island in Lake Pichola, scored for what it is.

Taj Lake Palace is a five-star heritage palace hotel where the setting is matched by unusually consistent hospitality. We'd choose it for a romantic celebration: arriving by boat, looking across Lake Pichola and dining in the former royal residence are the real draw. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise thoughtful staff, personalized meals and careful housekeeping; the enthusiasm extends beyond the architecture.

The compromise is space and convenience, not a broad pattern of poor service. Some rooms are compact by luxury standards, and garden-view categories do not face the lake. Trips into town require a boat crossing. Taj advertised guest-room upgrades for April 26–September 30, 2026; confirm completion and your room category before booking. We'd skip it if expansive rooms and direct street access matter more than palace atmosphere.

  • Best for: Couples celebrating a special occasion; Travelers drawn to royal history; Luxury stays centered on atmosphere

  • Watch out for: Compact rooms in some categories; Boat crossings for mainland outings; Confirm completion of the scheduled 2026 room upgrades

  • Location: Island setting with City Palace views; mainland outings involve a boat transfer.

  • Rooms: Some lake-view rooms measure 24–31 square meters; garden-view rooms do not overlook the lake.

  • Cleanliness: A strong overall signal: Expedia rates cleanliness 9.8, and Booking.com 9.6.

  • Service: Recent guests repeatedly praise attentive staff, dietary accommodation and personal touches.

  • Amenities: Outdoor pool, spa, fitness center, three restaurants and a bar; heritage activities add substance.

  • Fees and surprises: Airport transfers cost extra; verify room-upgrade completion rather than assuming every room is newly refreshed.
