Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong Midtown base with welcoming staff, stylish interiors and some compact rooms. a polished 4-star Midtown hotel in a historic building, scored for what it is.

NH Collection New York Madison Avenue is a polished 4-star in a historic Midtown building, fully renovated in 2021. It’s a strong pick for travelers who want sightseeing convenience without sleeping in Times Square. Recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, cleanliness and comfortable beds. Grand Central and Bryant Park are within an easy walk, while the retro-styled lobby and weeknight jazz give the hotel more personality than a straightforward business chain.

The main compromise is space: several guests find entry-level and twin rooms cramped, so choose the category carefully if you’re bringing substantial luggage. Noise reports are mixed rather than universally negative; light sleepers should request a quieter room away from the street. There’s also a mandatory nightly resort fee to check before booking. We’d skip it if generous room space matters more than location and style.

• Best for: couples on sightseeing trips; Midtown business travelers; travelers who enjoy a lively hotel lounge

• Watch out for: compact entry-level and twin rooms; street noise in some rooms; mandatory nightly resort fee

• Location: Walkable Midtown base near Grand Central, Bryant Park and Fifth Avenue.

• Rooms: Modern, comfortable interiors; room size and luggage space vary considerably by category.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback, particularly on Expedia.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff earn repeated praise, with occasional reports of uneven handling.

• Amenities: 24-hour gym, Serafina restaurant and MAD Bar & Lounge with weeknight live jazz.

• Fees and surprises: Check the mandatory resort fee and whether breakfast is included in your reservation.
