Axel's take: 6.1/10

Free parking and handy transit, but upkeep and sleep quality remain uneven. a no-frills 2-star motel in East Hollywood, scored for what it is.

The Onyx is a no-frills 2-star motel, formerly listed as Super 8, whose strongest arguments are free parking and a short walk to Hollywood/Western Metro. Nearby restaurants and shops make it practical for sightseeing. Recent Booking.com and Expedia guests include plenty who found their rooms clean and comfortable, but the overall picture remains mixed. We'd consider it for a short, budget-focused stay rather than a dependable all-rounder.

The compromises go beyond dated hallways: cleanliness, maintenance and front-desk helpfulness vary across reviews. Guests on Tripadvisor and Google report late-night music and vibration from a downstairs venue, a meaningful warning for light sleepers. Breakfast feedback describes little more than toast and packaged pastries; confirm whether anything is currently included. Some guests report refreshed bathrooms, but that does not establish a complete renovation. We'd skip it if quiet nights and consistent housekeeping are priorities.

• Best for: budget-focused sightseeing trips; drivers wanting free parking; travelers using the Metro

• Watch out for: reported late-night downstairs music; uneven cleanliness and maintenance; minimal breakfast; inclusion unclear

• Location: Short walk to Hollywood/Western Metro, restaurants and shops; some guests feel uncomfortable walking nearby at night.

• Rooms: Some comfortable rooms and refreshed bathrooms, alongside recurring reports of dated fixtures and maintenance problems.

• Cleanliness: Recent reports range from spotless rooms to dirty bathrooms and corridors; consistency is the issue.

• Service: Helpful staff earn praise, but dismissive front-desk encounters recur across sites.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, parking, in-room refrigerators and 24-hour reception; breakfast provision needs confirmation.

• Fees and surprises: Expect a refundable damage deposit; confirm its terms and ask about downstairs venue noise before booking.
