Axel's take: 7.7/10

A good downtown sleep stop, provided you’re comfortable trading hotel service for location. a no-frills, self-check-in 2-star near Petco Park, scored for what it is.

Hotel Gigi is a no-frills, self-check-in 2-star near Petco Park: a good pick for travelers who want a private room and plan to spend most of their time out. Recent Expedia and Hotels.com guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, convenient access and the walkable location. The compact rooms suit solo stays especially well, and the overall proposition is practical rather than pampering.

The trade-off is limited service, not just limited space. There’s no front desk; online registration and smart-lock instructions replace a conventional welcome, though guests often praise help by phone. Hotels.com lists no elevator or on-site parking, plus a refundable deposit. We’d choose it for a short, car-free baseball or convention trip, but skip it if you need spacious rooms, step-free access upstairs or staff reliably on hand.

• Best for: Solo travelers packing light; Car-free Padres trips; Budget-minded convention visitors

• Watch out for: Compact rooms; Online check-in; no front desk; No elevator or on-site parking

• Location: Walkable to Petco Park, downtown restaurants, the convention center and trolley stops.

• Rooms: Generally compact and simply equipped; Expedia lists a 2023 remodel.

• Cleanliness: A recurring strength in recent guest feedback, though not every report is spotless.

• Service: Guests often praise telephone assistance, but there is no conventional front desk.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and private showers; expect basics rather than full-service facilities.

• Fees and surprises: A refundable deposit and advance online registration are listed; parking must be arranged elsewhere.
