    Pasaport is the compromise I’d choose for a first visit: waterfront walks without sleeping among Alsancak’s bar streets. Cumhuriyet Square and the ferry pier give it an open, seafront feel; inland, Cumhuriyet Bulvarı and Gazi Osman Paşa Bulvarı feel more businesslike. Walk south for Kemeraltı or north along the Kordon for dinner.

    Stay here for the working old city, not a waterfront escape. Anafartalar Caddesi leads into Kemeraltı’s market lanes, with Kızlarağası Hanı, Hisar Mosque and food stalls close together. Konak Square and the Clock Tower are nearby, and the Agora makes an easy continuation of a morning’s wandering. This is the strongest base for market shopping and historic streets.
