Axel's take: 8.1/10

A strong Midtown base for extra space, with dated details and unavoidable extras. A practical 4-star Midtown East hotel with roomy suites and apartment-style options, scored for what it is.

The Fifty is a practical 4-star Midtown East hotel whose biggest selling point is space rather than luxury. We'd shortlist it for families and longer stays, especially in the apartment-style rooms with kitchens. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the generous rooms, comfortable beds, cleanliness and welcoming staff. Nearby subway stations and walkable Midtown sights make it an easy sightseeing base.

The trade-offs are recurring street noise, furnishings that some guests find tired, and a mandatory nightly facilities fee. Breakfast and valet parking cost extra, and some Tripadvisor guests report slow deposit releases. Building-permit records also list facade repairs and scaffolding in 2026; confirm their current impact before booking. It's a strong pick if room to spread out matters more than polished interiors; we'd skip it for reliably quiet nights or a luxury experience.

• Best for: Families needing extra space; Longer stays in kitchen-equipped rooms; Midtown sightseeing and business trips

• Watch out for: Street noise and some dated furnishings; Mandatory facilities fee and reported deposit delays; Facade-repair and scaffolding permits: confirm current disruption

• Location: Walkable Midtown East base near the 51st Street and Lexington Avenue–53rd Street subway stations.

• Rooms: Generous space is the draw; kitchens depend on room category, and some interiors feel dated.

• Cleanliness: Generally strong recent feedback, supported by Expedia's cleanliness rating.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn repeated praise; deposit handling draws some complaints.

• Amenities: 24-hour gym, guest laundry and paid continental breakfast; kitchen-equipped apartments suit longer stays.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory nightly facilities fee; breakfast and valet parking extra, with no parking in/out privileges.
