Axel's take: 7.1/10

A useful budget base near Alamo Square, with noise and upkeep compromises. a no-frills 2-star neighborhood hotel near Alamo Square, scored for what it is.

Casa Loma is a no-frills 2-star hotel near Alamo Square, best treated as a budget base rather than somewhere to unwind. We'd consider it for the walkable neighborhood, convenient buses and good value for San Francisco. Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff and location, and many report clean, adequate rooms. Refrigerators, microwaves and complimentary morning coffee make the simple setup more practical.

The trade-offs are small rooms, worn finishes and inconsistent housekeeping and maintenance. Recent reviews across sites describe traffic noise and sound carrying between rooms; there's also no elevator. Check the bathroom arrangement carefully: the official site still advertises both shared and private facilities. Ask whether interior construction reported by a July 2026 guest has finished. It's a reasonable pick for travelers spending most of their time out, but we'd skip it for light sleepers or anyone needing step-free access.

• Best for: budget-minded city explorers; car-free short stays; travelers prioritizing neighborhood over amenities

• Watch out for: traffic noise and thin soundproofing; stairs only; small rooms; uneven upkeep; confirm construction status

• Location: Near Alamo Square and neighborhood restaurants, with convenient bus connections.

• Rooms: Small and basic; refrigerators and microwaves are useful, but soundproofing and maintenance draw complaints.

• Cleanliness: Many guests report clean rooms, but recent Booking.com and Trip.com reviews also flag odors and inconsistent cleaning.

• Service: Helpful, friendly reception is one of the most consistent positives across booking sites.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, lobby coffee and 24-hour reception; no elevator, and bathroom facilities vary by room category.

• Fees and surprises: Refundable damage deposit required; no on-site parking. Confirm bathroom type and whether July 2026 interior works have ended.
