Axel's take: 7.8/10

A practical Midtown budget base, provided you can live with tight quarters. a no-frills 2-star hotel in Midtown’s Garment District, scored for what it is.

Doxie is a no-frills 2-star in the Garment District, and we'd pick it for a short, sightseeing-heavy trip rather than a hotel-centered stay. Its strongest asset is the walkable location near Penn Station, Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Booking.com and recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms and helpful staff, making this a solid budget option for travelers who mainly need somewhere to sleep. Fridges, free Wi-Fi and several multi-bed layouts add practical value.

The compromises are space and atmosphere: many rooms are compact, some guests report effectively windowless rooms, and the elevator is notably small. Tripadvisor's overall feedback is less enthusiastic, although newer accounts are generally more positive than its older complaints. Confirm the room's window arrangement before booking, and expect a refundable incidental deposit. We'd skip it if daylight, generous storage or room to lounge matters.

• Best for: budget-minded sightseeing trips; short stays near Penn Station or MSG; friends sharing multi-bed rooms

• Watch out for: compact rooms and limited storage; some rooms lack useful daylight; very small elevator

• Location: Convenient Garment District base within walking distance of Penn Station, Times Square and subway connections.

• Rooms: Basic, often compact rooms; check window arrangements, with bunk-bed options available for groups.

• Cleanliness: Recent Booking.com and Expedia feedback is predominantly positive, despite some negative accounts.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff are a recurring strength, though Tripadvisor includes less welcoming experiences.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, in-room fridges and safes, daily housekeeping and luggage storage; facilities are otherwise limited.

• Fees and surprises: Refundable incidental deposit required; pet fees apply, and the hotel asks for advance notice of arrivals after 11 p.m.
