Hotels in HiloAn older, full-service 3-star on Hilo Bay
7.3/10
Come for the bay views and roomy accommodation, not polished interiors or consistent housekeeping.
Hilo Hawaiian is an older, full-service 3-star whose strongest asset is its setting on Hilo Bay, beside Coconut Island and Liliʻuokalani Gardens. We'd consider it a practical base for exploring the island's east side, especially with an oceanfront balcony. Expedia and Trip.com guests regularly praise the views, spacious rooms and helpful staff; free self-parking, a pool and on-site dining add convenience.
The trade-off is an aging property with uneven upkeep. Recent reviews across sites describe worn interiors and inconsistent housekeeping, with some reporting dirty bedding or cockroaches alongside many clean-room reports. The hotel confirms housekeeping is every other day for stays of three or more days, and a mandatory resort fee applies. We'd skip it if spotless consistency, contemporary bathrooms or a polished resort experience matter more than location and space.

Best for: East-side explorers with a rental car; Travelers prioritizing oceanfront views; Families wanting spacious rooms
Watch out for: Dated interiors and uneven cleanliness; Limited housekeeping schedule; Mandatory resort fee
Location: Bayfront beside gardens and Coconut Island; downtown is better reached by car.
Rooms: Generously sized but dated; oceanfront categories offer private balconies and the strongest views.
Cleanliness: Many guests report clean rooms, but bedding, bathroom and pest complaints recur across sites.
Service: Often friendly and helpful, though front-desk responses and housekeeping follow-through vary.
Amenities: Outdoor pool, restaurant, lounge and laundry facilities; more practical hotel than destination resort.
Fees and surprises: Mandatory resort fee despite free self-parking; housekeeping every other day on stays of three or more days.
