Axel's take on Ala Moana & Kakaako: #5 of 6 in Honolulu, 6.1/10
A practical shopping-and-food base, not a seamless Waikīkī beach holiday. The highest value score and useful transport support Ala Moana, but lower hotel scores and separated dining districts limit its overall appeal.
Ala Moana works as a practical city base: the shopping center, beach park and bus connections replace Waikīkī's beachfront promenade. Kakaʻako adds a different outing, with Ward Village dining and the murals, cafés and bars around SALT. These are neighboring districts, not one continuous pedestrian strip; staying by the mall does not put every Kakaʻako restaurant on your doorstep.
Choose this side for shopping, food and downtown access rather than a classic resort setting. Broad roads interrupt walks, and evenings focus on particular dining blocks. The convention center is operating a modified event schedule during its 2026–2027 renovation, so confirm your event before making proximity the deciding factor.
- Best for: food lovers, business trips and conventions, museums and culture, shopping
- Skip it if: You want Waikīkī's beach promenade outside; You expect every Kakaʻako attraction to be a short walk
- Getting around: Ala Moana Center is a major bus interchange; 42, E and W use Ala Moana Boulevard, including the direct HNL W Line; walk to the mall and beach, then bus or taxi farther into Kakaʻako.
- After dark: Plan evenings around Ward Village or SALT rather than expecting one continuous late-night strip.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $209 a night · usually 5% under the public rate
