Axel's take on Mestre: #8 of 8 in Venice, 5.1/10
A practical mainland choice, not a substitute for sleeping in Venice. Offers the strongest hotel value and solid accommodation, but commuting to the main sights and a mainland setting put it last overall.
Mestre is a functioning mainland city rather than an extension of Venice's canal neighborhoods. Pedestrian Piazza Ferretto, its surrounding cafés and the M9 museum give central Mestre its own identity. The railway-station district serves a different purpose: convenient onward travel. These are not interchangeable locations, so choose between a pleasant local evening and the simplest railway departure.
It makes sense for a deliberate budget strategy, mainland work or a trip involving several Veneto cities. For Venice itself, the short train journey is only one part of the door-to-door commute, with more walking or a boat after Santa Lucia. Skip it for a short first visit if experiencing Venice after dinner is a priority.
- Best for: travelers on a budget, business trips and conventions
- Skip it if: You want Venice's canals outside your door; You want spontaneous late evenings in the historic city
- Getting around: Use tram T1 from Mestre Centro, or trains from Venezia Mestre to Santa Lucia; bus 2 also links the station with Venice. VCE and TSF airport buses serve Mestre station; neither airport currently has direct rail service.
- After dark: Piazza Ferretto suits dinner and an evening stroll; staying out in Venice means planning a bus or train back.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $131 a night

- Piazza Ferretto. Choose the pedestrian center for cafés, dinner and a local evening stroll rather than immediate railway access. Hotels here: Hotel Al Vivit.

- Via Ca' Marcello. Another station-focused option for commuters and rail travelers, not a substitute for evenings among Venice’s canals. Hotels here: Leonardo Royal Hotel Venice Mestre.
How to choose
- Choose UnaHotels Ecohotel Villa Costanza Venezia if you drive and want private parking, well-kept rooms and practical transport advice.
- Choose Hotel Al Vivit if cafés and pedestrian-square evenings matter more than sleeping opposite the station.
- Choose Best Western Plus Hotel Bologna if your family wants spacious rooms directly opposite the station and accepts commuting into Venice.
What paying more buys
Hotel Plaza Venice is cheaper than most here but has a marked gap between modern and dated rooms. Best Western Plus Hotel Bologna costs a little more and makes room space a recurring strength while keeping the opposite-station convenience. The difference is less worthwhile for solo travelers on a brief stop who mainly need transport access. Typical rates with Axel here run from $114 a night at Hotel Plaza Venice to $147 at Best Western Plus Hotel Bologna (last 30 days).
