Where to go and why

  • Nairobi: Bush flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport reach the Masai Mara in about an hour
  • Kilimanjaro: Arusha is about an hour away, the start of the Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti circuit
  • Johannesburg: Kruger is about a 5-hour drive, or a short connecting flight to Skukuza, Hoedspruit or Nelspruit
  • Maun: Light aircraft fly from Maun to camps in the Okavango Delta and Moremi in under an hour
  • Victoria Falls: The falls themselves, with Chobe about 90 minutes away and Hwange about 2 hours
  • Kigali: Mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, about 2.5 hours away, and Akagera's Big Five
  • Entebbe: Gorilla treks in Bwindi via a one-hour domestic flight, and Murchison Falls by road
  • Windhoek: Self-drive north to Etosha's waterholes, about 5 to 6 hours, or southwest to Sossusvlei's dunes
  • Dar Es Salaam: Short flights to Nyerere, formerly part of the Selous, and Ruaha, Tanzania's quieter southern parks
  • Lusaka: Short flights to canoe safaris in Lower Zambezi and walking safaris in South Luangwa
  • Durban: Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, Africa's oldest proclaimed park and a white rhino stronghold, about 3 hours
  • Mombasa: Tsavo East's red-dust elephants about 2.5 hours inland, then the Indian Ocean beaches
  • Zanzibar: A beach finish after a Tanzania safari: Stone Town's alleys and the white sand at Nungwi

Most safaris add a bush flight or a long drive from the airport, and gorilla trekking needs a permit booked well ahead. Check visa and vaccination rules for each country before you go.
